Türkçede şart fiil ekiyle yapılır: -sa / -se (gelirsen, gelseydin). İngilizcede if bağlacı ve zaman kombinasyonları kullanılır.

Hep doğru olan genel kural, bilimsel gerçek.
If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.Suyu 100°C'ye ısıtırsan kaynar.
If I am tired, I sleep.Yorgunsam uyurum.
First conditional
Gelecekte olması mümkün bir durum.
If + present simple, will + V1
If it rains tomorrow, we will stay home.Yarın yağmur yağarsa evde kalırız.
If you study, you will pass.Çalışırsan geçersin.
I won't go if it rains.Yağmur yağarsa gitmem.
Second conditional
Şu an için gerçek olmayan ya da mümkün olmayan durum. “Were” tüm öznelerle kullanılır.
If + past simple, would + V1
If I were rich, I would buy a house.Zengin olsaydım, ev alırdım.
If I had a car, I would drive to work.Arabam olsaydı işe arabayla giderdim.
What would you do if you won the lottery?Piyango kazansan ne yapardın?
Third conditional
Geçmişte olmayan bir şey için hayal; pişmanlık.
If + past perfect, would have + V3
If I had studied, I would have passed.Çalışmış olsaydım geçerdim.
If she had known, she would have called.Bilseydi arardı.
I wouldn't have missed the bus if I had left earlier.Daha erken çıksaydım otobüsü kaçırmazdım.
Mixed conditional
Geçmişteki şartın şimdiki sonucu:
If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.Tıp okumuş olsaydım şimdi doktor olurdum.
